Elysium Commission, The [Mar. 25th, 2008|08:57 am]
[Tags|, ]

Elysium Commission, The by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. 2007 Tor Science Fiction
first read, okay book, not as good a Gravity Dreams, but more upbeat than most Modesitt's SF books
Reread unknown, probably slightly better than first read, Modesitt does leave his protaganists in the dark.
Much Philosophy Drama.
Similar to The Ecologic Envoy lots of thinking, action wraps everything up at the end.

River is Darian? [Feb. 14th, 2008|10:54 am]

Simon smiled affectionately. "I'd like a snack. Should we ask Kaylee if she wants to join us?"
     "No. She doesn't like me."
     "Of course she does."
"No, she doesn't. She's been afraid of me ever since I solved that problem in fractal geometry."
"Why would she be afraid of you for solving a geometry problem?"
"Some people are just afraid of numbers."

...[much later]...

"Times like this," said Mal, "I always ask myself, 'what would Jayne do?'"

Submitting Writing [Feb. 21st, 2007|10:53 am]
Writing Contest:The Magazine Baen's Universe and the National Space Society are jointly hosting the James Patrick Baen Memorial Writing Contest. The prize is publication at pro rates, plus perks. The focus of the contest is on near-future science fiction and realistic depictions of space travel. It's a fabulous way to honor Jim Baen, and ought to be a lot of fun, besides.

Where Can I submit stuff? Every single person reading my blog ought to know about ralan and duotrope, but I recently discovered that some of you aren't. For shame! (Not shame on you; shame on me. I've been lax in my duties.) Now you know.

I really need to finish "Solar Circle" for the JPBMWC, I can look at ralan and duotrope if it does not win.

Contemporary Supernatural [Sep. 13th, 2006|01:00 pm]
[Tags|]

Currently there is a Speculative Fiction (SF) trend towards Contemporary Supernatural. A female, normal or supernatural, gets involved with vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. All the traditional Halloween critters are represented plus others depending on author.

My favorite of this group is Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. Its biggest strength is also its biggest drawback, it is a solo volume. Next comes Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris, which I like mainly for two reasons. The protagonist is not a minor deity in power, and it is the most light hearted of the series. Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn has some great humor. I am a little worried that the protagonist will become too powerful later on in the series (currently at two book).
Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison
is fascinating due to its magic system. I read
Dates from Hell by Kim Harrison, Lori Handeland, Lynsay Sands, Kelley Armstrong
first, which I think helped me enjoy _Dead Witch Walking_ more than I would if I had read them the other way around.

To Be Continued…
